The renovation plan of Tian’anmen Tower has been approved by State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the renovation is set to begin on June 15, 2018, according to the administrative committee of the Tian’anmen area recently.
The committee also announced that Tian’anmen Tower will be accordingly closed to the public from June 15 to avoid the safety hazard brought by the situation that construction workers, facilities and visitors coexist during construction period.
In history, Tian’anmen Tower underwent two major construction projects during Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) and in 1970, it was rebuilt with earthquake-resistance capacity and radio and television broadcast facilities.
In recent years, Tian’anmen Tower has been tested to be in a safe state in general by professional institutions. However, there are still problems like water seepage, wall hollowing, color painting cracking and facility aging, which affect its normal opening and use for major events.
This time, the renovation work will mainly address those problems and it is scheduled to complete by the end of May, 2019. Tian’anmen Tower is expected to reopen by the end of April, 2019.
